Thank You For Always Recording!
When I was 11 years old, my father (who was my bff), passed away quick (diagnosed with Leukemia on Monday the 24th & passed on Thursday the 27th). To say it was unexpected is to say the least. My dad was amazed by technology. You name it: car phones, video game systems, camera, video cameras. He passed in 95, so I can’t imagine what he would think today!!! P.S. Yes, I said car phone. You know, the one you plugged into the cigarette lighter back in the day? It came with a briefcase to carry it in. My how times have changed!
My dad ALWAYS used that clunky video recorder to record all special events. He would put it on a tripod and park it anywhere and everywhere. I never thought much of it then, but that big video camera in front of us while we were carving pumpkins, celebrating birthdays, opening up presents on Christmas morning, and coloring Easter Eggs became the best gift my daddy could have given me.
Even Though It’s A Video, I Still Get To Hear Your Voice Again!
Ever hear someone say, “I’d give anything to hear his voice again?” Well, I said it about my dad many times, and when I came across that HUGE collection of VHS tapes, my wish came true. Everything, I mean EVERYTHING we ever did was on tape. I was able to relive all of those cherished memories, and hear his voice! What a world of a difference that makes. Yes, pictures are amazing, but can you imagine watching videos of your childhood and being able to see mannerisms and hear the laugh of a cherished loved one that you slowly forgot?
I CANNOT tell you how lucky I am that my dad recorded all those memories for us. I recently moved all of those videos to DVDs, and I can pop them in while I’m cooking and/or cleaning to just hear his voice. My children will be able to hear their grandpa’s voice, and my husband gets to see the wonderful childhood I had, too!
Let’s Do This For Our Children
I knew when my daughter was born that I was going to make sure she had all of her family memories to look back on. That’s why I make it a point to be in every photo or video with her that I can. We take selfie videos when we are being silly, and I know that is something she can look back on one day and feel joy again. Sure, photo albums are great, and I totally recommend those, too, but they don’t allow you to hear the voices, the laughs, the jokes, or the joy.
I am an extremely lucky girl that I can hear my daddy’s voice whenever I’m really missing him. At the time, he didn’t know he was providing me with such a beautiful gift, but I am certainly so thankful that he did!
If you’re reading this post, I’m assuming you do not have a video camera and a tripod, and neither do I! Realistically, in this day in age, we mostly use our phones to capture photos and video. Check out this post on how to compile those photos and videos on a DVD so you can share them with your children!
